Why We Chose Furoshiki

We recently added furoshiki to our shop, along with the option to have your tea order gift wrapped. Here's why we chose it, and why it felt like the right fit for us.

Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth: a single square of fabric that can be folded and tied to wrap almost anything. It has been used in Japan for centuries, long before disposable gift wrap existed.

Growing up watching Japanese shows, furoshiki always appeared in the same kind of scene: a mother wrapping a bento for her child before school. It was a small detail, but it said a lot. Someone had taken the time and care to wrap it thoughtfully.

A later visit to Japan made something clear: furoshiki appeared whenever something meaningful was being given.

When considering how to wrap our teas, paper never felt quite right. It serves its purpose for a few moments before being torn away. A furoshiki, by contrast, continues to be useful long after the gift is opened. It might wrap a lunch, carry a bottle, or simply wait in a drawer until it's needed again.
